I thought I’d reached the end of my musical career two years ago, in January 2023, after I suffered a stroke; my only desire was to try to recover.
I found it very hard to write, talk, swallow, walk etc, but more importantly, I couldn’t play the keys with my right hand.
After that traumatic episode I completely stopped taking any form of medication for my various ailments. The medication I think caused my problem in the first place.
Back in April 2021, I started building a music studio in front our seafront house, here in Yuge Island, Kamijima, situated almost in the centre of the Inland Sea of Japan.
With little finance and much support from my Japanese wife and neighbours, I decided my best form of rehabilitation was to slowly continue with the building work.
Now I’m still on the way to recovery and grateful to be able to put a whole new album together.
About ‘TEARS IN HIS EYES’
The first important track, ‘The Piano Player’ was initially recorded for my solo album in 1976, with lyrics and vocals from John Murphy, and subsequently recorded with Caravan in 1979.
Then it was completely restructured as a solo performance for a promotional music video released in 2021, but the audio recording has never been on general release until now.
The other tracks, although some are familiar, haven’t been released before in their present form, and have different instrumentation, singers or solos.
Working on this album has inspired me to continue with music, and I still have a large back catalogue of unreleased brand-new material.
The mood of this album I feel is more in keeping with the general feeling in this world right now and reflects the potential vulnerability and uncertainty of the future that lies ahead for all of us.
But ‘hope’ still remains eternal !
